If you’re in WA you may have already heard local independent luminary, RTRFM, is celebrating 20 years of it’s annual local music festival-In The Pines. Named as much for it’s location as it is for The Triffid’s rural recorded gem of ’86, In The Pines is the festival that has been happening way before others of it’s kind were even a twinkle in the festival-worshippers eye. As well as the beautiful setting that is The Somerville Auditorium, be treated to a retrospective of WA’s diverse music history of the last two decades. The Panics will be playing the 11nth Rock it in Perth later this year. The Black Keys round out a fantastic line-up that has a strong WA focus featuring John Butler, Birds Of Tokyo and The Kill Devil Hills. For those that can remember, The Black Keys played a fantastic show at The Charles Hotel in North Perth about ten years back. They could almost be locals. On a Black Keys side note- Check out the new Dr. John record the Keys own Dan Auerbach produced. Destined to be a classic.

“Earlier this year I found myself in Indonesia. It was my first time there and I was immediately struck by the beauty in its colours, landscape and the people’s warmth and spirituality. A filmmaker friend of mine and I decided to take some time travelling and film what happened, with the idea to make a film clip. We realised that being somewhat out of place wherever we went, that the idea of the foreigner in a new landscape not quite fitting in, was very much like the subject matter of ‘Not Quite A Home’. The song, written in England and based around a friend of mine never feeling at home in that land and always being the outsider, was a perfect match for the footage.

Over a few days we decided to simply hit the road and meet locals, get talking, have a drink and a conversation (when possible) and keep the camera rolling. Out of place and on the road we roamed with the song and stopped town to town. We gambled at a makeshift pool hall on the side of a highway, wandered the charred remains of a volcanic crater, walked through empty late night market places and roadside bars. One morning we found ourselves following a large crowd into a makeshift arena and found ourselves amongst a few thousand gamblers screaming at the illegal but tolerated cock fighting. It was brutal and highly intense to watch, but is very popular and a cultural event you don’t see every day. Of all the places to feel most out of place, that would have to be it.

The song is a personal favourite and in many ways telling of the recurring themes on ‘Rain On the Humming Wire’. A song of displacement, travel and unrequited love, written between Australia and England; it’s what we do best.”

Following the ‘Endless Road’ with their latest single The Panics are the latest band to partner with Genero.tv, who have also run music video competitions for Duran Duran, Moby, David Lynch, Alicia Keys, Band of Skulls, The Temper Trap, Booka Shade, plus many more. Their videos have been screened at Cannes, on TV, at Coachella, at London’s BFI and ACMI in Melbourne, as well as a host of film festivals.

Genero.tv provides a platform for filmmakers to make the official music videos for featured artists and songs. While championing filmmakers from around the world and helping expose them to the international music industry, it also offers a new way for artists to connect and engage with their fans. They allow the global creative community to make and upload their own music videos for the world to watch, vote on and spread virally.

The winner of The Panics’ clip competition was Indian director Achyutanand Dwivedi and featured a cyclist riding the endless road through the Indian countryside, reflecting the rapid development of the nation “touted to be the next big economic superpower”.

“In that frenzy, development is creating things around us; but I ask what does it mean for the common man? So my film has a cyclist (the common man), traveling on this road (a sign of development/infrastructure) with no end; the scale of development is unnecessary, irrelevant, too much for the common man,” says Achyutanand of the clip.

With a background in TV and film, including a stint on ‘Indian Idol’ Achyutanand Dwivedi is an award-winning independent filmmaker in his native country and has also had his work celebrated at Cannes and the British Film Festival. Having lived in the city his whole life, he wanted to experience the “country of villages” that make up the great expanse of India.

“I saw the real India that exists along the highways and the roadways; the India of small villages, local celebrations, flavours and people. For me the making of the film was a life-changing experience, it wasn’t just another film. I hope I have been able to communicate that feeling. “

We felt that Achyutanand not only captured that feeling, but also captured the essence of their rolling single, the pain of everyday and the struggle to keep going through heartbreak.

You can view the clip here: http://genero.tv/watch-video/32256/# and check out the other eight finalists work here: http://genero.tv/thepanics/

Following on from their sold out national tour and stand out Splendour In The Grass performance, The Panics hit the road again in September and October for their official album tour.

With ‘Rain On The Humming Wire’ buzzing amongst the press to five star reviews and Feature Album of The Week at triple j, frontman Jae Laffer has proven his place as the strongest voices of the next Australian generation of songwriters.

“Let’s not waste decades to celebrate a remarkable Australian band. The Panics are something special.”

Album of The Week *****
Simon Collins, The West Australian

“Distinctly Australian, yet of universal appeal, The Panics’ fourth record convincingly betters their last while affirming them as one of this country’s strongest rock acts.”

The Brag, Album Of The Week, 4/5

Music critics and fans often say the same thing about The Panics: listening to their songs is like immersing yourself in the soundtrack to your own life. In their albums and EPs, people discover the cinematic score to their own lost Australian summers: the bittersweet Antipodean road-trips where they found first love and made new friends, only to lose it all on the way back. Underneath the elegant pop-rock tracks are modern hymns for a generation, anthems of rash joy and quiet heartbreak: all the songs you would have written yourself, if only you had the right words on hand.

The Panics now take unique perspective to all corners of the great southern land with a tour spanning all capital cities and major regional towns.

“Rain on The Humming Wire” is out now.

The Panics “Rain On The Humming Wire” Tour

Presented by triple j, Rave, The Brag, Beat and Drum Media Perth
